1.In his memoirs Frank goes further in explaining Russian cruelty: ‘I had corroborated evidence of Russian soldiers raping highly pregnant German women and then nailing them to doors by their wrists and ankles so they died in childbirth under incredible suffering. My mind, thoroughly accustomed to atrocity through the testimony about German atrocities, boggled once more’.

2.NKVD – Narodnyy Komissariat Vnutrennikh Del – was the People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs or the interior ministry of the Soviet Union.

3.The Deutsche Volkspolizei (German People’s Police), abbreviated to DVP or VP and colloquially known as the VoPo – was the national police force of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany).
